hCaptcha keeps appearing. Here is why.
You solve the image grid, click submit, and another one appears. Or the same site asks again on the next page. hCaptcha repeats for a handful of reasons, and most of them have nothing to do with how well you picked the tiles. This page goes through each one and what you can change.
Every check is good for one action
Solving a challenge gives the page a token, and the site checks that token once. It expires after about two minutes and cannot be reused. So when you log in, then post, then change a setting, each of those can trigger its own check. Passing one challenge never puts you on an allow list for the rest of the visit.
The two-minute expiry catches people too. If you solve the challenge, get distracted, and submit the form five minutes later, the token is already dead and the site asks again.
A wrong or slow answer starts a new round
hCaptcha doesn't tell you which tile it disagreed with. It shows another puzzle. Some prompts are honestly ambiguous ("click each image containing a vehicle" with a bus half out of frame), and a round with zero matching images trips people who assume they must pick at least one. Taking a long time on a round can also cost you the round.
Your connection looks risky
Before it shows anything, hCaptcha scores the request. The address you connect from counts most. VPN exits, mobile carriers that put thousands of phones behind one IP, and home addresses with a bad history all start with a worse score, and a worse score means more rounds and harder puzzles. A browser that wipes cookies on every close looks like a first visit every time. The full list of signals is in why am I getting hCaptcha.
Some sites ask everyone, every time
Site owners decide where the widget runs. Plenty of them put it on every login, signup or message send, whatever your score. If one site challenges you on every visit and the rest of the web leaves you alone, that is the site's setting and nothing on your side will change it.
What helps
- Turn off your VPN for the site that keeps asking. It fixes more cases than anything else.
- Let cookies persist for the site and for
hcaptcha.com. - Set your system clock to sync automatically.
- Turn off extensions that fake your user agent or rewrite headers.
- Submit the form soon after you solve the challenge, before the token expires.
- Stop refreshing the puzzle. Each new attempt in a short window makes the next one longer.
If the widget loops even when you are sure the answer was right, something is usually blocking part of it. Ad blockers, DNS filters, Brave Shields and Tor all cause this; the fixes are in hCaptcha not working or not loading.
Or let an extension solve them
Sometimes you have done all of that and the site still asks on every page. The NoneCap Chrome extension notices when an hCaptcha challenge opens and clicks through it for you. It handles image grids, drag puzzles and point-on-image challenges. You get 100 free solves a day without making an account, and you can pause it per site or block sites where you never want it to run.
It won't make challenges appear less often, because that is up to hCaptcha and the site. It takes over the clicking. The extension sends only the challenge area of the screen, and only while a challenge is open; the extension privacy policy has the details.
