The hCaptcha accessibility bypass is gone. What now?
For years, signing up for hCaptcha's accessibility program got you a cookie that let you skip the image puzzles. If that cookie has stopped working for you, you are not doing anything wrong. hCaptcha changed the program, and the old one-time setup no longer carries you through. Here are the options that are left.
What changed
The accessibility cookie still exists, but it works differently. Enrolling
takes a code confirmed by SMS to a US phone number. The cookie lasts about a
day, works a few times a day, and has to be refreshed by logging back in. A
valid cookie no longer guarantees a pass: depending on the site, it may let
you through or show you an accessibility challenge instead. And because the
cookie is set by hcaptcha.com and read inside another site's
page, Safari, Firefox and Chrome treat it as a third-party cookie and block
it by default. The long version is in
the accessibility cookie
guide.
Your options now
| Option | What you do | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the accessibility cookie current | Enroll with hCaptcha, confirm by SMS, log back in when the cookie expires | US phone number required, a few uses a day, and many browsers block the cookie |
| Ask the site for the text challenge | Request that the site enable hCaptcha's Accessibility Challenge | Only the site owner can switch it on, and most haven't |
| Use a solver extension | Install an extension that solves the visual puzzle in your browser | Needs Chrome, and costs credits after the free solves |
Keep the cookie current
If you qualify and have a US number, the program still helps on some sites.
Log back in on hCaptcha's accessibility page when the cookie expires, and
allow third-party cookies for hcaptcha.com in your browser's
site settings so the widget can actually read it. Expect it to work on some
sites and not others.
Ask the site for the text challenge
hCaptcha has an in-widget Accessibility Challenge, a text alternative to the image grid. Site owners have to enable it, and most never have. If a site you depend on keeps locking you out, it is worth writing to them and asking them to switch it on.
Let an extension solve the puzzle
If you can use Chrome but the image puzzles are the problem, a solver extension takes them off your hands. The NoneCap Chrome extension notices when a challenge opens and solves it on the page: image grids, drag puzzles and point-on-image challenges. It doesn't depend on a cookie or on the site's settings. You get 100 free solves a day with no account; for more, you can add a NoneCap API key in the options.
It captures only the challenge area of the screen, and only while a challenge is open (privacy policy). You can pause it on any site. Add it from the Chrome Web Store.
