What is a CAPTCHA solver?
A CAPTCHA solver is a tool or service that completes a CAPTCHA for you, so a person in a browser or a program can carry on past it. For people it is usually a browser extension. For developers it is usually an API, often called a captcha solving service, that returns the answer or a token the site accepts. Below are the main types, what each returns, and what to check before you pick one.
What a captcha solver gives back
Older captchas, like distorted text or "type the numbers in the image", have a plain answer. A solver for those returns the text, and your code types it into the form.
Widget captchas like hCaptcha work differently. Passing the challenge puts a
token into a hidden form field, and when
the form is submitted the site's server checks that token with the captcha
provider. For hCaptcha that check is
siteverify. So a solver for these
returns a token. Your code puts it in the field (for hCaptcha,
h-captcha-response) and submits. The token is single-use and
expires in about two minutes, so it has to be requested right before the
submit.
Types of captcha solvers
| Type | Who uses it | What you get | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser extension | People who meet captchas while browsing | The challenge solved on the page you are viewing | Works only in the browser it is installed in |
| Solving API (a "captcha solving service") | Developers: scrapers, test suites, monitoring, AI agents | An answer or a token your code submits | Which captcha types it really supports, and whether failures are billed |
| Human-worker service | Developers with unusual or custom captchas | An answer typed or clicked by a paid worker | Speed depends on how many workers are online |
| Self-hosted model or script | Teams with time to build and maintain it | Whatever you build | Breaks when the captcha changes, and you maintain it |
On a human-worker service, people do the solving. 2Captcha, for example, advertises "captcha entry work" and hands captchas to paid workers. Many services now solve automatically and keep people only as a fallback, if at all. For a developer the request and the response look about the same either way; the difference shows up in how fast and how steady the solves are.
What people use captcha solvers for
- Testing your own site: end-to-end tests of a signup or checkout flow with hCaptcha on it. The test sitekeys cover builds where you can swap the key; a solver covers tests that run against your real production sitekey.
- Collecting public data: scrapers and price monitors that stop at a captcha; see hCaptcha solving for web scraping.
- AI agents that fill forms and need to finish the step a captcha guards; see hCaptcha for AI agents.
- Everyday browsing: people who meet the same puzzle again and again, or who find image puzzles hard, use an extension; accessibility alternatives covers the options.
How to pick a captcha solver
Start with the captcha you actually face. Find out which one the site uses (an hCaptcha sitekey in the page source is a quick tell), then check these:
- Does it support that captcha today? Lists of supported types go out of date. Look for the type in the service's current API docs and price list.
- Does the site accept its tokens? Some enterprise hCaptcha sitekeys send extra data (
rqdata), and on those sites a token solved without it is refused. Try the solver on your real target before you scale up. - Are failures billed? Some services charge per attempt. Others charge only for solves that return a token.
- How much code does it need: one request and one response, or a submit-then-poll loop? Is there an SDK for your language?
- Is the price published? You should be able to work out the cost per thousand solves before you top up.
NoneCap is built for one captcha: hCaptcha, including invisible mode and enterprise sitekeys. It usually returns the token from one API call, charges from 1 credit per challenge round, and never charges a failed solve. If your code already calls another service, the comparisons show how to switch. If you need reCAPTCHA or Cloudflare Turnstile as well, pick a general service for those; the best hCaptcha solver page names them.
Can AI solve CAPTCHAs?
Mostly, yes. Image models now handle tile grids and distorted text well, so captcha providers no longer rely on the puzzle alone. hCaptcha scores the whole visit (the connection, the browser session, how fast requests arrive) and uses that to decide whether to show a puzzle and how hard to make it. That is why the same site can wave one visitor through and give another three rounds; why am I getting hCaptcha explains the signals. A solver has to come back with a token the site's server accepts, and a right answer does not always get one. The can AI solve CAPTCHAs guide collects the published numbers and what OpenAI, Anthropic and hCaptcha say about AI agents.
Is using a captcha solver legal?
Whether it is allowed depends on the site and on what you do there. Use a solver where you are allowed to automate: your own sites, your tests, and services whose terms permit it. NoneCap's terms rule out fraud, credential stuffing, spam and unauthorised access, and leave it to you to check the terms of the sites you use it on.
